Sovereignty or corrupt Puppet government?

From the very beginning of our national history, Americans have been arguing about the proper role of government. Put succinctly, the dispute is between those who regard government as "them" and those who see it as "us."
Our two founding documents embody the tension in its classical form. The Declaration of Independence locates sovereignty in the individual citizen, who possesses the rights of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," as Thomas Jefferson so lyrically put it, and the power of government is described as an alien force that must be put on the permanent defensive.

I was awe-struck by a story on the Oz ABC recently – which barely got a run internationally – describing, by inference, the horrendous social obstacles women face in Afghanistan. However, in order to gain a real perspective on the subject we need to amplify those horrendous conditions ten-fold and then marvel at the remarkable bravery of one lone Afghani woman and member of a corrupt, servile, misogynistic all male Afghani Parliament. The challenges this woman faces daily are rape, assault and assassination; contrast with western domestic ‘crises’ like a faulty vacuum-cleaner or toaster!

SCO: Prospects For A Multipolar World

On June 15th and 16th the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will hold its ninth annual heads of state summit in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg. It will be attended by the presidents of its six full members - China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan - and by representatives of various ranks from its four observer states - India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan - and from several aspiring partner nations yet to be announced.

It seems that traditional Oz values, egalitarianism, mutual support, mateship and national identity are not dead after all; notwithstanding that former PM and war criminal, John ‘rodent’ Howard, did everything in his power to eradicate traditional Oz values and replace them with second-rate (now failed) American values of callous exploitation, dog eat dog competitiveness, and citizen/user pays for everything – including the ineptitudes of corporate executives, bankers and Wall St. elites!

Sarkozy’s ‘incoherence’ is a sign of the euro-impasse.
Riots swept across Eastern Europe this winter. In Latvia 100 were arrested when they attacked the Finance Ministry with cobblestones from the quaintly restored tourist area protesting unemployment, budget and wage cuts. In Lithuania, riot police fired rubber-bullets and tear gas on a trade union march. A demonstration in the Bulgarian capital turned violent leading to the arrest of 150 protesters. These three states are all members of the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM2), the euro’s pre-detention cell. They must join.

Oz Parliament Suspended

The Australian Parliament suspended normal business today to acknowledge the bushfire tragedy that continues to impact the State of Victoria. Politicians from both sides of the House expressed their sympathies for the victims. As of 11 Feb., 181 lives have been lost to the fires. Large townships have been severely impacted and some historical hamlets have been wiped out completely. Expressions of grief and sorrow gushed from Parliament House like the water pillaged from our artesian basin by BHP-Billiton! Today is a day of national reflection for more reasons than one.

The black saviour of the world, the great American orator, the ‘new transformative’ image America needs so desperately to succeed just fumbled his lines taking the Oath of Office, for Pete’s sake! Not even dunderhead ‘dubya’ fumbled those lines; sort of makes you wonder, don’t it? A portent of the future perhaps! A quick search of the net revealed this classic one-liner; "underneath the pose there's just more prose, I suppose." In a land of one-liners it makes its point! But we are not so harsh as to criticise a man, only a man, a puppet of the status quo, for exhibiting nerves on such a MOMENTOUS DAY OF FRAUD. Wake up America [real reform is so near we can taste it!]

It is appropriate that the home of democracy reminds us never to tolerate oppression, violence and corruption from non-representative minority governments that have subverted the democratic process and stolen power. We are all reminded of the price extracted when we fail to be vigilant; the murder of a 15 year-old boy in Greece by the reviled authorities and the one million innocent civilian dead in Iraq are consequences of allowing criminals to seize power and failing to act swiftly to remove them. The horrendous death toll inflicted by America in Iraq is the result of OUR INACTION in the face of FLAGRANT CRIMINAL ACTIVITY.

A President with integrity invokes the same sentiments as his predecessor Abe Lincoln, who stated, “I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crises. The great point is to bring them the real facts."
Kennedy refers to the same sentiment in his speech to the Newspaper Publishers Association: “No President should fear public scrutiny of his program. From that scrutiny comes understanding; and from that understanding comes support or opposition. And both are necessary... I have complete confidence in the response and dedication of our citizens whenever they are fully informed.”
